What child and relative visas are available for Australia?
The main pathways are the subclass 101 Child visa applied for outside Australia, the subclass 802 Child visa applied for inside Australia, the subclass 445 Dependent Child visa for children of provisional partner visa holders, the subclass 114 Aged Dependent Relative visa and the subclass 115 Remaining Relative visa. Each has a distinct eligibility test rather than being interchangeable.
How much do child and relative visas cost?
The base application charge is AUD 4,040 for the subclass 101 Child visa, the subclass 802 Child visa and the subclass 445 Dependent Child visa. The subclass 114 Aged Dependent Relative visa and the subclass 115 Remaining Relative visa are each AUD 6,600, and the subclass 114 also carries a second instalment of AUD 2,065 per person payable before grant.
What is the difference between a subclass 101 and a subclass 802 Child visa?
They are the same visa for different locations. The subclass 101 is applied for while the child is outside Australia; the subclass 802 is applied for while the child is in Australia. Both are permanent and both cost AUD 4,040. Where the child is when the application is lodged and decided determines which one is available, and getting this wrong is costly.
Who qualifies for a subclass 115 Remaining Relative visa?
It is for a person whose only close family members live in Australia — in effect, the last remaining relative outside Australia. The test is strict and turns on who counts as a near relative, including siblings, parents and step-relatives, wherever they live. The base charge is AUD 6,600. Because the test is narrow, an eligibility assessment before lodging is worthwhile.
What is a subclass 445 Dependent Child visa for?
It allows a dependent child to join a parent who holds a provisional partner visa and who has applied for, but not yet been granted, permanent residence. It is temporary and costs AUD 4,040. Timing matters: it must generally be lodged before the parent’s permanent partner visa is decided, so it is easy to miss.
Do these visas have a queue like parent visas?
Some do. Home Affairs caps places in several family visa categories, and where demand exceeds places, applications are queued. Home Affairs publishes current processing information for each subclass. Child visas are generally treated differently from other relative categories, and no registered migration agent can guarantee a processing time or an outcome.
