How much does the subclass 200 Refugee visa cost?
There is no visa application charge for the subclass 200 Refugee visa. The Department of Home Affairs states this on its own visa listing. Other costs can still apply, including health examinations, police certificates, document translation and travel to Australia. Charges change, so confirm the current position on the Department’s website before you apply.
Who can apply for a subclass 200 Refugee visa?
It is for people who are outside their home country, outside Australia, and subject to persecution in their home country. The Department states it usually grants this visa to people referred for resettlement by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Applicants must also meet health, character, identity and security requirements.
How long does a subclass 200 application take?
The Department does not publish a standard processing time for this visa. Its own guidance says the decision process could take many months, or even years, because the number of resettlement applications received each year is far greater than the number of visas available. No agent or lawyer can shorten that queue.
What can you do on a subclass 200 visa once it is granted?
It is a permanent visa. Holders can stay in Australia permanently, work and study, and propose family members for permanent residence. Permanent residents may also apply for Australian citizenship once they meet the residence and other requirements set out in the Australian Citizenship Act 2007.
Can I apply for a subclass 200 visa from inside Australia?
No. The subclass 200 is an offshore visa. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when a decision is made. People who are already in Australia and seek protection apply instead for a Protection visa, subclass 866, which has different criteria and a different application process.
Do I need a registered migration agent for a refugee visa?
You are not required to use one. If you do pay someone for immigration assistance in Australia, they must be a registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner. You can check any agent’s registration free of charge on the OMARA register at mara.gov.au before you pay anything.
