The subclass 858 National Innovation visa is a permanent visa. The Department of Home Affairs describes it as a visa for people who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in an eligible area. It grants permanent residence on grant rather than through a provisional stage, and it does not require employer sponsorship or state nomination.
How much does the National Innovation visa cost?
The Department of Home Affairs publishes the subclass 858 visa application charge as from AUD6,235.00, with concessions applying in limited circumstances. From 1 July 2026 a lower charge applies to eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens. Charges for included family members, health examinations and police certificates are additional. How are National Innovation visa applications prioritised?
Applications are considered in the order of priority set by Ministerial Direction No. 120, which took effect on 25 July 2026 and applies to Class BX, subclass 858, applications. The direction sets out how the Department gives effect to the Government’s priority processing intentions for this visa. It affects the order applications are considered in, not whether an application succeeds.
How do I start a National Innovation visa application?
The process begins with an Expression of Interest submitted to the Department of Home Affairs, not with a visa application. If the Department invites you, you then lodge the visa application itself. Because the evidentiary bar is high, the strength of the Expression of Interest and the supporting record of achievement matter more here than on most skilled visas.
What can I do once I hold a subclass 858 visa?
The Department states that with this visa you can stay in Australia permanently and work and study in Australia. Permanent residence also brings access to Medicare and the ability to include eligible family members in the application. Australian citizenship is a separate application with its own residence and character requirements.
