Eligibility Requirements
For the Aged Dependent Relative (Applicant)
✔ Must be aged (pension age) and not in a de facto or married relationship
✔ Must be financially dependent on their sponsor for at least 3 years
✔ Must be the sponsor’s eligible relative (e.g., parent, sibling, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew)
✔ Must not have other close relatives outside Australia they rely on
✔ Must meet health and character requirements

✔ Must be settled in Australia (usually for at least 2 years)
✔ Must provide an Assurance of Support (AoS) – a financial commitment to prevent reliance on government assistance

How much does the subclass 114 Aged Dependent Relative visa cost?
The Department of Home Affairs lists the subclass 114 visa application charge from AUD6,600.00, with concessions available in limited circumstances. Budget also for health examinations, police certificates, document translation and an assurance of support. Charges are reviewed periodically, so confirm the current figure on the Home Affairs website before you lodge. Figure verified 14 September 2026.
How long does a subclass 114 visa take?
Aged Dependent Relative applications are capped and queued, so waits run to many years. As at 31 May 2026 the Department had released applications with a queue date up to 30 June 2013 for final processing, and was acknowledging new applications in about five weeks. Processing times published by the Department are the only reliable guide, and no agent can shorten the queue.
Who counts as an aged dependent relative?
You must be old enough to receive the Australian age pension, have no partner, and have depended on your Australian relative for basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing for at least three years before you apply. Your sponsor must be an eligible relative, or that relative’s partner, and the Department must approve the sponsorship.
Can I apply for the subclass 114 visa from inside Australia?
No. You must be outside Australia both when you apply for the subclass 114 visa and when the Department decides it. An onshore equivalent exists, the subclass 838 Aged Dependent Relative visa, for people already in Australia. Subclass 838 is subject to the same capping and queueing arrangements, so the wait is comparable.
Is an assurance of support required for the subclass 114 visa?
Yes. You must be able to obtain an assurance of support, a commitment that you will not need to rely on certain government payments after you arrive. It covers you and any family members who come with you. The Department tells you in writing when the assurance is required, usually late in processing.
What can families do while a subclass 114 application waits in the queue?
Many families use Visitor visas for time together while an application sits in the queue, and check whether a Parent visa pathway fits their circumstances better. A Visitor visa does not lead to permanent residence and does not change queue position. Which option suits depends entirely on your circumstances and is worth reviewing before you commit.
