How much does an Australian visitor visa cost?
The subclass 600 Visitor visa Tourist stream, applied for outside Australia, starts from AUD250 as published by the Department of Home Affairs. Other streams, and applications made inside Australia, carry different charges. Concessions apply in limited circumstances, including for eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens from 1 July 2026. Each applicant pays their own charge.
How long can I stay in Australia on a visitor visa?
A subclass 600 Visitor visa in the Tourist stream can allow a stay of up to 12 months, though many visas are granted for three or six months. The period granted depends on your circumstances and the stream you apply under, and the visa carries conditions about the activities you may undertake. Overstaying affects future applications.
Can I work in Australia on a visitor visa?
No. A Visitor visa does not permit you to work in Australia. The Business Visitor stream allows limited business activities such as attending conferences, negotiations or exploratory business visits, but it does not allow you to take up employment. If your purpose is to work, an employer-sponsored or other work visa is the correct pathway.
What is the difference between a visitor visa and an eVisitor or ETA?
The subclass 600 Visitor visa is open to a wide range of passport holders and is lodged as a full application. The eVisitor (subclass 651) and Electronic Travel Authority are streamlined options available only to specific passport holders. Which one you are eligible for depends on your passport, so it is worth checking before you lodge and pay.
Can I bring my parents to Australia to visit me?
Yes, parents can generally apply for a subclass 600 Visitor visa, and a Sponsored Family stream exists where an Australian relative sponsors the visit and may be asked to provide a security bond. Applications are assessed on genuine temporary stay, ties to the home country and financial capacity. Longer-term options sit under the parent visa programme.
Can I extend or apply for another visitor visa while I am in Australia?
In some cases you can lodge a further Visitor visa application while in Australia, but many Visitor visas carry condition 8503, No Further Stay, which prevents this unless the condition is waived. Waivers are granted only in limited circumstances. Check the conditions on your grant notice before making plans to remain longer.
