Sequencing these three steps correctly is the most common planning problem on 407 matters.

How much does a subclass 407 Training visa cost?

The visa application charge starts from AUD535.00 for the main applicant, as published by the Department of Home Affairs and checked on 18 September 2026. Sponsorship and nomination applications carry their own separate charges paid by the employer, and additional applicant charges apply for accompanying family members. Concessions apply in limited circumstances.

How long can you stay in Australia on a subclass 407 visa?

The Department may grant a subclass 407 visa for a stay of up to 2 years. The period actually granted depends on the length and structure of the approved training program, so a twelve-month program will generally attract a shorter grant than a two-year one. The visa is temporary and is not extended indefinitely by repeat training.

What is the difference between a subclass 407 and a subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa?

A subclass 407 covers structured occupational training, where the purpose is to improve the trainee skills rather than to fill a job. A subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa covers ongoing employment in a nominated skilled occupation. Employers sometimes reach for a 407 when the role is really an ongoing position, which is a nomination risk worth testing before lodgement.

Does a standard business sponsorship let an employer sponsor a 407 trainee?

No. A standard business sponsorship supports subclass 482 nominations. Sponsoring a subclass 407 trainee requires approval as a temporary activities sponsor, which is a separate application with its own criteria. Employers who already hold a standard business sponsorship still need to apply for temporary activities sponsorship before they can nominate a trainee.

Can a subclass 407 Training visa lead to permanent residence?

The subclass 407 has no direct permanent residence stream. It is a temporary training visa. The Australian workplace experience and any registration or licensing obtained during the program can, however, strengthen a later employer-sponsored application such as a subclass 482 or subclass 186. Whether that is realistic depends on the occupation and the employer, and is worth assessing before the training starts.
